Marathon

1995

Rudy Autio

American, 1926 - 2007

The imagery of "Marathon" evokes an ancient sporting event and reminds us that the Greeks often represented horses on their vases. Autio modelled an eccentrically shaped container and filled its surface with incised and painted images. The vessel's bulges help define the limbs and heads painted on them. Autio's energetic design extends the modern tradition of expressive, stylized animal imagery practiced by Pablo Picasso, Franz Marc, and others.
