ca. 1970

Joseph Cornell

American, 1903-1972

"Both of these collages are reworked photostats of drawings by Joseph Cornell's brother, Robert (1910-1965). They may depict the backyard of the family's Flushing house on Utopia Boulevard, where the artist lived with his mother and two siblings. Robert and his sister, Elizabeth, were both talented amateur artists. Following Robert's death in 1965, Cornell dedicated collages to his memory and made several collages from copies of Robert's drawings. He wrote earlier of his brother, 'the essential nature of R. is something too deep and difficult for adequate expression.'"
