Six-panel Screen: Horse Racing at Kamo Shrine

early 18th century

Since the late 11th century, an annual horse race has been held on the fifth day of the fifth month as part of the festivals at the Upper Kamo Shrine in Kyoto. Praying for peace and prosperity, Kyoto residents set up the ritualistic races to entertain the shrine gods.
