Noh robe

Datelate 17th-early 18th century
Label TextThis elegant textile began its life in the home of an aristocrat, who later donated it to an acting troupe, following the practice of the time. In this way, the robe moved across social classes as well as across space and time. This migration of objects across boundaries was not unusual, particularly in the topsy-turvy Edo period, when the new urban elite gained an unprecedented degree of purchasing power.
