Woman in Summer Attire
1921
Kajiwara Hisako (1896-1988) is one of the handful of women artists in Japanese art history, particularly well known for her unpretentious paintings of working class or professional women. This work is considered one of the most evocative examples of her distinctive approach. The un-idealized image of a somewhat untidy woman in kimono, sitting at the window and giving us an ambiguous look, elicits a variety of interpretations from viewers.
