Gift cover (pojagi)

ca. 1990

Kim Youngyeul

Korean, born 1959

Nearly a hundred years after the end of the Choson Dynasty, this artist is reviving the art of constructing and embroidering a classic pojagi. Such patient re-creation of a type of pojagi that would traditionally have been used to wrap gifts speaks to the depth of importance they once had in Korea. It is said that wrapping an object with distinction showed respect and concern for the receiver. Some felt pojagi were empowered to enclose or capture pok (good fortune).
