A Man Ray Version of Man Ray
1960
Whether she was using different cameras or photographing new subject matter, Cunningham was constantly experimenting with her photographic techniques-making double-exposures, superimposing negatives, and photographing views of reflections in mirrors. A Man Ray Version of Man Ray is a vivid example of her explorations. Cunningham had photographed the Dada and Surrealist artist in Paris in 1960. When she later printed the negative in her darkroom, she superimposed approximately six negatives, giving the impression that the image is vibrating and creating an expressive portrait of the artist, whose photographs and paintings were also frequently about experimentation and distortion.
