Label TextRepeated roundels with pairs of imperial five-claw dragons decorate this robe. Impressive in its size if standard in silhouette, this man’s garment worn on informal occasions exemplifies the most refined quality of weaving afforded to Manchu aristocrats. Light and gauzy, the cooling silk damask would be a welcomed relief in the summer months. The purple-crimson tone of the material is enhanced by the “horseshoe” cuffs, which are lined in a contrasting brilliant turquoise. The robe displays the wearer’s high status but also their sartorial style in sleeves that show a flash of bright color while gesturing.
