Pendant

Datelate 18th - early 19th century

Label TextAdornment of such complexity and weight (over 7 pounds) implies that this pendant was likely meant to be suspended in a temple and not on a person. Densely decorated, it offers a showcase of semiprecious stones set against a background of garnets and wire filigree. The turquoise face at the top is known as the "Face of Glory" or kirttimukha, which appears often in the art of India, Nepal and Tibet. At the bottom, a red coral image of Ganesha, a favorite diety of India and Nepal, is set into a floral cluster.
