Rabbit mask

Burkina Faso , Bwa/Bobo culture

Fractured teeth reinforce this rabbit’s startling expression, one that appears both comical and gruesome at the same time. Animal spirits in Bwa culture are believed to have distinct personalities whose masked form is manipulated to impart lessons. One can only imagine the dance steps, music, and behavior that an errant rabbit masquerader would engage in.
