Winter

1948

Alden Mason

American, 1919 - 2013

Painted a year after Darrington Rain, Winter reveals Mason becoming more expressive with his use of paint. Here, his palette shifts to include multiple shades of green, blue, and yellow, each color seemingly vibrating off the surface. With this landscape, he encourages viewers' awareness-not first and foremost to a specific place and time, but to the artist's experience and translation in paint of a memorable landscape.
