Label TextThe decorative brown rim copies Chinese export wares, which were often glazed this way to cover the easily chipped edges. The overglaze blue enamel seen on the tree trunks was a Japanese innovation, which was later introduced into Chinese overglaze painted porcelain. Substituting for underglaze blue, it facilitated the making of polychrome ware in one firing, instead of the two needed for under- and overglaze colors.
