Dateca. 12th century
Label TextThe milky-white slip background-an imitation of porcelain-brightens the painted design ofbird-and-flower. Their vivid colors display a confidence in mastering the newly developed overglaze-enameling technique, in which designs were painted on pre-fired, usually glazed, ceramic ware and then re-fired at a lower temperature to fuse the colors to the surface. This bowl is a rare masterpiece of its period.
