Charles ElliottFirst Nations, Tsartlip, born 1943

Coast Salish artist Charles Elliott was born on the Tsartlip Reserve on the west

side of Saanich Peninsula, near Victoria. The self-taught artist began carving and

drawing at an early age, and he continues to study, produce and teach Salish art

full time. Charles works in a classic Coast Salish style in his carving, graphics and

engravings out of a love of his own traditions coupled with the rights and privileges

he owns. He has completed totem poles at the University of Victoria, the Saanich

Tribal School, the Victoria Police Department, as well as in Japan and the United

States.
