Joan Stuart Ross was born in Boston, Massachusetts and educated at Boston Latin School; Connecticut College, B.A.; Yale University; the University of Iowa, M.A., M.F.A. and the University of Washington (Teaching Certificate; Poetry Writing Certificate).
Joan has lived in Seattle since 1968, creating and teaching art at local colleges, universities and in her own studio. She has exhibited her work in more than 50 solo and 250 group exhibitions. Joan has pioneered and taught the art of the monotype in the Northwest since 1970. In 1981 she was awarded the Betty Bowen Memorial Award from the Seattle Art Museum. In 1993 she won the Rome Fellowship from the Northwest Institute for Architecture and Urban Studies in Italy, when she spent three months living and painting in Rome. Most recently she was awarded the 1995 Kathe Kollwitz Award by the Seattle Women's Caucus for the Arts for her advocacy of women artists and their work.
Her art work has been featured in Fifty Northwest Artists, Northwest Originals, and the the recently published Contemporary Printmaking in the Northwest. Her biography is included in the 1997 Who's Who in American Women. Her poetry has been published in several literary periodicals, as well as on the World Wide Web and on the Seattle METRO busses.
The art of Joan Stuart Ross is included in many public and private collections, including the Seattle Art Museum, the City of Seattle, the State of Washington and a recent commission of paintings for the new King County Justice Center.
