Tony Hunt Sr.First Nations, Kwakwaka'wakw, Kwakiutl, 1942 - 2017

Born in 1942 at Al~rt Bay, Tony is one of the best known Kwagulth artists and

hereditary chief of the Hunt family. He apprenticed under Mungo Martin, his

maternal grandfather. Between 1958 and 1972 he worked with Mungo at the

Royal Museum in Victoria. After Mungo's death, he worked with his father Henry

Hunt restoring totem poles at Thunderbird Park in Victoria. In 1969, he opened the

Arts of the Raven Gallery in Victoria with John Livingston with a private

woodcarving workshop. Tony's private commissions include two Kwagulth houses

for the Field Museum. He stated once that "I have made a point to do whatever I

can to pass this on to other people." He is also the brother of Richard Hunt
