Floyd "Tyee" JosephFirst Nations, Kwakwaka'wakw, born 1953

Floyd Joseph, also known by his Indian name Tyee, is a Coast Salish artist and member

of the Squamish Nation. He was born in 1953 at Homultcison (Capilano) on the North

Shore of Burrard Inlet, Vancouver. He grew up amongst carvers, including his father

Chief Larry Joseph, and in a family with a string heritage. His brother Larry is also a

carver. His work is internationally collected. He has a welcoming pole at the University

of Victoria. In addition to carving he has worked in silver and produced silkscreen

prints. In 1999 he won the Canadian Council Grant in Fine Arts .
