Vernon Stephens
Vernon Stephens is frequently remembered and paid homage to for his long teaching
career at the Kitanmax (or Gitanmaax) School of Northwest Indian Art at the Ksan
Historical Village and Museum near Hazelton. He was one of the master teachers with
Ken Mowatt, Walter Harris, Earl Muldoe(n) and Art Sterritt. Vernon was one of 4 Gitxsan
artists who carved the massive entrance doors in 1976 at the then brand new University
of British Columbia's Museum of Anthropology. Stephens along with Kew Mowatt were
the two primary artists that illustrated the 1977 book, Wy-gyet Wanders On, Legends of
the Northwest, a collection of Ksan stories.
