Don YeomansFirst Nations, Haida, born 1958

Don Yeomans, Haida, was born in 1958 and trained under his aunt Freda Diesing,

who was one of the instrumental persons involved in the renaissance of Northwest

Coast art. She was one of the first students at Gitanmaax and later a teacher at the school. He also worked with Robert Davidson. Don began to experiment radically with "negative" design field in the late 1970s and has become recognized for his creative and innovative work. In his work the empty negative space is painted black and the form lines are left unpainted (the "negative") and the secondary line are painted red. This is a reversal of the painted black form lines of tradition. Thus Don has taken the traditional Northwest Style into new areas but firmly based upon traditional ideas. He has works in several major Canadian Museums.
