Glen Rabena
Glen Rabena was born in Wapato, Wa., and began his carving career in Seattle in
1970. Of Filipino heritage, he has lived for many years in his adopted culture of
the Northwest Coast. He is consider affiliated as an adopted Haida. In 1975 &
1976 he studied at the Kitanmax School of Northwest Coast Art at Ksan. (A
school founded in the 60's by a group of Tsimshian and Carrier Indians. The
resultant Ksan style evolved from ·the flat angular designs of Duane Pasco to a
sweeping style with truncated or stretched form lines. The Ksan style lends itself
well to a kind of naturalism in the designs depicted, especially birds. The
traditional colors are red and black, and occasionally blue-green.) An
accomplished artist in wood, gold, silver and ivory, he is best known for his bird
serigraphs. His love of nature comes through in his graphic designs, which tend to
be less traditional than his other work. He has the ability to capture the spirit of his
subject in his prints. In the late 1980's he started to work with Robert Davidson
and other Haida artists. He currently resides in Quesnal, B.C.
