Richard HuntFirst Nations, Kwakwaka'wakw, born 1951

Richard is a son of Henry Hunt and brother of Tony Hunt (and related to Eugene Hunt).

He is also the grandson of Mungo Martin. Richard was born in 1951 in Alert Bay but

raised in Victoria where he absorbed the Kwa-Gulth culture through his family's

involvement in totem carving projects at the British Columbia Provincial Museum.

Richard began carving at the museum in 1972 and left in 1986 to pursue a freelance

career. His masks and poles are a major part of the current Kwa-Guluth culture for

dances and potlatches. Richard is also an accomplished dancer. His prints are usually

in the traditional Kwa-Gulth style. In 1991 Richard received the Order of British

Columbia in recognition of his artistic and cultural contributions. In 1994 he received the

prestigious Order of Canada. See www.richardhunt.com for more information.
