Label TextPresident of Liberia from 1944 to 1971, William Vacanarat Shadrach Tubman gave women the vote in liberia, opened the country up to world trade, and tried to give indigenous people a greater voice in the country's government. In African affairs, he was known as an outspoken opponent of white rule in Africa and played a pivotal role in the creation of the organization of African Unity (OAU).
