Alessandro Raho
British, born Bahamas, 1971
Label TextRaho is a British painter whose portraiture is influenced by the paintings of Alex Katz and the straightforward figurative photography of Thomas Ruff. Raho uses his family and friends-often fellow artists, and most of them men-as his sitters. While the subject matter is personal, Raho tries to achieve some emotional distance from his sitters so that he can approach the painting objectively. Raho first takes a photograph of the subject, and then simplifies the forms and minimizes the detail to reduce portraiture to its barest essentials.
