Recumbent horse

Date18th century
Label TextLarge sculptures of horses and buffalo were carved of quality jade in Suzhou during the late eighteenth century. As a motif the horse is most strongly associated with the Tang dynasty (618-907), but the Tang simply marks a peak in broad use of the image across time in a variety of forms.
