Date16th century
Maker Pieter Brueghel the Elder Flemish, 1525-1569
Maker Jeronimus Cock Flemish?, 1510-1570
Label TextThe women at the center, shown with books and tablets representing the Word of God, embodies True Faith. The congregation, preoccupied with the formal rituals and sacraments of the Catholic Church, ignores the symbols of Christ's suffering and death placed near her. Like many other contemporary observers, Bruegel believed that ceremonies and relighious image endorsed by the Church distracted worshippers from the true Word of God.
