Label TextThis unlined robe made of breathable bast faber would have been worn in the intense heat of midsummer by a woman, her family crest appearing along the shoulders. The lower part of the robe features a landscape with a blossoming cherry tree, chrysanthemums, and a flowing stream. Its design was made using stencils and an exacting dyeing technique called chayazome, a type of indigo dyeing in which patterns are applied to both sides of the fabric. Scattered across the landscape are motifs such as a courtier’s cap and horse fittings that suggest the characters of an ancient tale or Noh play.
