Label TextJars of this shape, called placenta jars, were produced for the royal families in the Choson period. They contained a smaller jar of the same form in which the birth placenta of a new-born prince or princess was preserved. The jar was securely bound together with the lid, then buried in an auspicious area. A distinctive grayish-white color identifies the vessel as 17th-century porcelain.
