Dark and Sweet

Date2008
Label Text The breast, symbol of femininity and motherhood, has been Sanpitak’s signature artistic motif for over twenty years. The artist uses this motif to address perceptions of women’s roles in society. Since 2007, her large-scale paintings in a series called Breasts and Clouds associate the female body with landscape. Here, a dark cloud hovers above a breast floating against a black background. The artist offers an ambiguous interpretation: “The dark tone has a hint of a sweet allure, like dark chocolate. It’s dark but still has undertones like a dark night, a deep dark sky. Mysterious.”
