DateDecember 1974
Maker Vernon Stephens First Nations, Gitxsan, born 1949
Label TextThe Gitanmaax School of Northwest Coast Art, located at the K’san Historical Village, opened in 1967 and became a locus of art activity, including printmaking. The school developed a distinctive graphic style characterized by innovative compositions, narrative elements, and stylized formlines. Stephens trained here and was also an instructor. With Ken Mowatt, he illustrated a notable book of Gitxsan legends, Weget Wanders On, a visual narrative of the adventures of Weget (Raven) as he encounters many beings on his journeys. Here, Raven is seen in human form.
