Label TextPictured in this formal portrait is the American writer, Elizabeth Williams Champney (1850-1922), who became well known in the late 19th century for her travel essays published in Century and Harper's. From 1878 to 1921, she wrote more than forty-five books, including Three Vassar Girls, Witch Winnie, and Bourbon Lilies: A Story of Art Life. This is the first commissioned portrait Cunningham made in her First Hill Studio.
