Label TextThis richly decorated panel probably hung down the back of a dalmatic, the outer liturgical vestment of the deacon, also worn on occasion by bishops. The red silk satin panel features appliqués of paper and silk fabric. Silk embroidery and couched gold threads create the scenes of Saint George slaying the dragon, Saint Andrew holding the distinctive X-shaped cross on which he was martyred, and ornamental foliage motifs. In couching, the metallic gold threads are laid across the fabric in decorative patterns and attached with small stitches.
